Nestled along the coast of South Carolina, Beaufort is often celebrated for its well-preserved antebellum architecture and rich history.
However, hidden gems of this area lie just beyond the city limits, scattered across the shimmering waters – the surrounding Sea Islands. Each Island has its own unique charm and story, offering visitors and residents alike a serene escape into nature, history, and the laid-back lifestyle that defines the Lowcountry. From the sandy shores of Hunting Island State Park to the Gullah culture of St. Helena Island, these Islands serve as gateways to exploring the diversity and beauty of the South Carolina coast.
1. Lady’s Island is a picturesque retreat just a bridge away from downtown Beaufort.
Connecting the two areas is the stunning Woods Memorial Bridge. Golf enthusiasts adore the lush Lady’s Island Country Club and Sanctuary Golf Clubs nestled in dense woodlands. This Island boasts charming neighborhoods like Coosaw Point and Newpoint that add to its allure.
2. St. Helena Island: The hub of the vibrant Gullah community known for its rich cultural heritage.
Experience authentic Gullah cuisine brimming with local seafood and produce in local restaurants. Witness the African traditions upheld by Gullah descendants through their exquisite sweetgrass baskets, widely available at roadside stands in the Frogmore area of the island.
St. Helena Island is also home to the Penn Center. Once the nation’s inaugural school for freed slaves, the Penn Center later became integral to the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is said to have initiated his famous “I Have A Dream” speech here. Today, amidst oak-shaded wooden cabins and community structures, educational and cultural programs connected to the Sea Islands’ history thrive at this location.
3. Dataw Island, a mere 6 miles east of Beaufort, feels like a different world.
This small 4-by-2-mile isle offers stunning views of saltwater marshes and tidal creeks. Don’t be fooled by its rustic setting; Dataw Island is a sophisticated gated golf community. This private residential community blends natural beauty with ample amenities and entertainment.
4. Harbor Island, a small resort island just across the bridge from downtown Beaufort in South Carolina, offers a unique coastal experience.
Located 14 miles east of Beaufort, it is part of the Carolina Sea Islands with vast tidal marshes and some upland areas. Initially used for hunting, the Island saw development in the 1930s when US Highway 21 connected it to Saint Helena Island and Hunting Island State Park. A swing drawbridge over Harbor River connects it to Saint Helena Island, while a causeway over Johnson Creek links it to Hunting Island.
5. Hunting Island is a State Park located 17 miles east of Beaufort on U.S. 21.

It offers five miles of pristine beaches, a historic lighthouse, and a nature center. Here, you can discover a tranquil lagoon, an ocean inlet, a fishing pier, and trails through maritime forests. You can even camp by the ocean for an unforgettable stay!
6. Fripp Island is the outermost of South Carolina’s barrier islands.
It features a 3.5-mile beach with vast stretches of soft sand and breathtaking ocean views. This idyllic location relies on golf carts for transportation amidst stunning natural landscapes and the soothing sounds of the sea.
