And we have a government service/organization that believes every dog and cat deserves a chance at happiness. Beaufort County Animal Services (BCAS) works tirelessly to match stray, abandoned or orphaned animals in need of a forever home with loving families.

About Beaufort County Animal Services

BCAS provides animal care and control services for domestic animals to all of Beaufort County. Their mission is to promote responsible ownership of domestic pets and livestock. They provide temporary shelter for stray, unwanted, or homeless animals and facilitate a comprehensive relocation program, including health screenings, vaccinations, and mandatory spaying or neutering. All efforts are carried out by a humane and professional team in full compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.

Beaufort County Animal Services’ Commitment to Pit Bulls

Beaufort County has an abundance of pit bulls. BCAS faces severe overcrowding, especially with pit bulls and pit bull mixes. Few dog breeds face as much misunderstanding and stigma as the pit bull. Often mislabeled as aggressive or dangerous, these affectionate companions are too often overlooked in shelters. But here in Beaufort County, a heartwarming change is underway. Inspiring rescue stories are shining a light on the true, gentle nature of pit bulls while also showcasing the kindness and dedication of community members working tirelessly to support their adoption and care. These stories remind us of the resilience of these dogs and the power of compassion to change minds—and lives.

The BCAS Pit Stop pit bull program is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless pit bulls and pit mixes in our community. The program encourages pet adopters to meet all the lovable pit bulls currently available for adoption through Beaufort County Animal Services. The shelter urgently needs temporary foster homes for pit bulls to create space and provide these dogs with care and comfort until they find their forever homes.

Adoption Events

At Beaufort County Animal Services, we’re all about bringing our community together with engaging events to raise awareness, promote responsible pet care, and help our animals find the loving homes they deserve.

Their lineup of events includes adoption days, where you can meet adorable pets ready to join your family. Recently, they have appeared at the Bluffton Farmers Market. They host workshops and educational seminars on topics like pet care, training, and the importance of spaying and neutering—helping ensure our community is equipped to care for its pets responsibly.

Beaufort County Animal Services’ Fostering Program

Beaufort County is home to the only animal shelter required by ordinance to accept all homeless pets. This means over 5,000 animals come through thier doors every year. These are animals with nowhere else to turn and who might otherwise remain on the streets. Unfortunately, this often leaves us with more animals than our shelter can accommodate.

By opening your home to foster, you’re giving cats and dogs the time they need to meet adoption requirements and increasing their chances of finding a loving forever home. Foster care is especially vital for animals who can’t currently be adopted, such as:

• Puppies or kittens too young or small to be spayed/neutered
• Mothers with nursing litters
• Animals recovering from illness or injury
• Dogs undergoing heartworm treatment
