If you were a kid in the mid 1990s, you probably remember Gullah Gullah Island.
Gullah Gullah Island is an American musical children’s television series. Nick Jr. programming produced by and aired it on the Nickelodeon network. The show ran from October 24, 1994, to April 7, 1998.
Ron and Natalie Daise created the show. The husband-and-wife team, their three children James, Vanessa and Simeon; their niece, Shaina; and a giant tadpole named Binyah Binyah Poliiwog were the main characters on this educational program. Ron and Natalie hosted Gullah Gullah Island. Both also served as cultural advisors. Gullah Gullah Island talked with kids about important issues. The show was inspired by the Gullah culture of Ron Daise’s home of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, part of the Sea Islands. The series follows the family as they learn about culture and life.
