For the third year in a row, the Gullah Kinfolk Traveling Theater will hold its third annual Gullah Taste of Christmas featuring the Rice Cook-off Competition.
The event is a part of the Sea Island Gullah Christmas Celebration to be held on Saturday, December 3, 11 AM to 4 PM at the Henry C. Chamber Waterfront Part in downtown Beaufort, S.C.
“This is our third year, and we are looking forward to more entries and good rice dishes,” said Founder and Creative Director Anita “Aunt Pearlie Sue” Singleton Prather. “Gullah Geechee people, we love our rice dishes. If you feel you can cook a rice dish that will make you slap your momma, we want to have you in the competition.”
Rice is a staple among Gullah Geechee households, and the Gullah Rice Cook-Off showcases this “gold” by encouraging participants to show off their culinary skill by preparing a rice dish for which they are known. The entry fee is $50, and contestants can enter by visiting www.gullahkinfolktravelingtheater.org.
Each dish will be judged based on five criterion – texture, flavor, consistency, crumb, and taste. There will be three winners who will receive a plaque and a cash prize – first place $1000, second place $500, and third place $250. Cash prices have been increased from 2021.
The competition gathers professional Gullah Geechee chefs, caterers, restaurateurs, and home cooks from the Gullah Geechee Corridor – Florida to North Carolina – to participate in this event.
